'An East Berlin Love Story': This sweeping drama, set against the backdrop of two families in the shadow of the Berlin Wall during the 1980s, emerged as one of the most-watched television mini-series on German television in 2010. It tells a story akin to that of Romeo and Juliet, featuring the Kupfers, a family of communist party loyalists whose patriarch, Hans, is a member of the notorious Stasi secret service, and the Hausmanns, a family of dissidents, with their matriarch, Dunja, under Stasi surveillance. The romance that unfolds between policeman Martin Kupfer and the young, troublemaking Julia Hausmann ignites a politically forbidden relationship that threatens to undermine the very foundations of both families. This meticulously produced epic is not only an exhilarating tale of Romeo and Juliet-style romance but also an engrossing historical narrative.
Friedemann Fromm, born in Stuttgart in 1963, pursued his studies at the Academy for Television & Film in Munich. His extensive filmography includes "Carambolage" (1985), "Ramsch mit hatt'n" (1986), "Borderline" (1987), "Eins zu eins" (1989), "Freispiel" (1991), "Eine mörderische Liebe" and "Brüder auf Leben und Tod" (1995), "Paradise Mall" (also known as "Schlaraffenland", 1999), and "Brennendes Schweigen" (2000).
