简介： This is a narrative drawn from the transcripts of the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Sarah, portrayed by Vanessa Redgrave, along with her two sisters, were brought to trial under suspicion of witchcraft. Tragically, her sisters were met with the ultimate penalty, being burned at the stake, while Sarah was sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment within a cell so small that she could barely lie down. Upon her release, her family's name was exonerated, yet all she received in compensation for her sufferings were three gold sovereigns, the currency of the realm at that time.

Abby Williams, the niece of a local preacher, began to delve into the practice of fortune-telling and other illicit activities, which she had learned from the enslaved Tituba. This trend was soon adopted by other local girls, who began to exhibit peculiar behaviors. Abby and the girls eventually began to label local individuals as "witches" and attribute their ailments to witchcraft. The accusations multiplied, with hundreds being imprisoned, despite many questioning the veracity of the charges. Among those accused were three sisters—Mary, Rebecca, and Sarah. All were confined to jail for an extended period, until Mary and Rebecca were found guilty, despite their protestations of innocence. They were executed by hanging, and due to overcrowding, Sarah was sent to a farm to await her trial. She was kept in complete isolation within a chicken coop, where she became increasingly ill and desolate until her family arrived to rescue her.

The madness had subsided, yet the cunning girls, along with one "afflicted" mother, had first succeeded in providing sufficient "evidence" to result in the hanging of 19 individuals on charges of witchcraft and the pressing to death of one. Ten years later, the story was recounted to a court by Sarah, who sought to restore her family's reputation. Although the judges could not immediately render a verdict on guilt or provide compensation, they did offer Sarah three symbolic sovereigns, one for each life that had endured suffering.
