简介： Lucia uncovers the reason behind Georgie's secluded retreat—it is due to his bout with shingles. She kindly allows him to take refuge at Grebe, where he grows a beard to camouflage the blemishes on his neck. However, he is compelled to color it, as the beard turns grey prematurely. Lucia indulges in the stock market, and her investment in the South African gold mine, Siriami, yields substantial dividends. This success spurs the other residents of Tilling to emulate her. As the share prices reach their zenith, everyone except Mapp and her new spouse, Benjy, who fare less favorably with their returns, sells their shares at a profit. Concurrently, both Mapp and Lucia announce their intention to vie for seats on the local council, positioning themselves as political adversaries.
