简介： Frustrated by the dismissive moniker "talking heads" to denote the most monotonous segments of the schedule, Alan Bennett embarked on a mission to reclaim the monologue – a form once synonymous with music hall and stand-up comedy – as a central element of TV drama. Patricia Routledge's portrayal of a dying office meddler in "A Woman of No Importance" (1982) served as a blueprint for two subsequent series of six episodes each, featuring Maggie Smith as a bewildered vicar's wife and Thora Hird as two widows dealing with different trials. The direction showcased a rare, economical shift in perspective, concentrating on the actors' faces and voices, and highlighted the author's exceptional talent for nuanced storytelling. "Playing Sandwiches," in which David Haig plays a park keeper, initially takes a deceptive turn of nostalgic Bennettian charm – "I was in the paper shop this dinnertime, picking up some licorice allsorts" – but evolves into a bold endeavor to delve into the mind of a pedophile. Amid an era where seasoned actresses have lamented the dearth of quality roles, Bennett crafted 11 prime-time parts for older women. By 2008, when "EastEnders" presented a solo episode for Dot Cotton that paid homage to "Talking Heads," it became apparent how accurately the unassuming yet pioneering Bennett had navigated television's prejudices.
