简介： Helen Alving is on the cusp of consecrating an orphanage she has meticulously constructed in honor of her late husband, Captain Alving. In a confessional moment with her spiritual guide, Pastor Manders, she discloses the shadowy truths of her marriage, which she has kept concealed. She reveals her intentions behind the orphanage—to squander her husband's fortune—and thereby to ensure that their son, Oswald, receives nothing from his father's estate.

Pastor Manders had once advised her to reconcile with her husband, despite his profligate affairs. Driven by her unyielding love and the hope that her steadfastness would eventually transform him, she adhered to his counsel. Yet, her husband's infidelities persisted until his demise, and Mrs. Alving remained steadfastly with him until the end, fearful of ostracism by society if she were to leave him.

As the narrative unfolds, Mrs. Alving is confronted with a heart-wrenching revelation: her son Oswald, whom she had discreetly sent away to shield him from his father's influence, is afflicted with inherited syphilis. The revelation is compounded by an even more shocking discovery—Oswald has fallen passionately in love with Regina Engstrand, Mrs. Alving's loyal maid. It is later disclosed that Regina is an unrecognized daughter of Captain Alving, making her Oswald's own half-sister.
