简介： The mysterious vanishing of Sir Julius Hanbury, accompanied by the theft of several of his risqué artworks, presents Morse with a perplexing new case to unravel. With the assistance of Detective Sergeant Lewis, Morse meticulously interviews every individual within Hanbury House. During their exploration of the estate, they disturbingly discover Sir Julius' lifeless form, fittingly, within the family mausoleum. The pathologist's examination reveals that Sir Julius met his fate at the hands of a frenzied attacker; however, the absence of blood at the crime scene leads the police to deduce that the murder took place elsewhere.

Sir Julius was a prospective candidate for the prestigious position of Master at an Oxford college, and he was widely known for his acrimonious rivalry with another aspirant for the role. Tragically, Roger Meadows, a friend of the Hanbury family's au pair, meets a similar end in a seemingly accidental car accident, prompting Morse to suspect that he too was the victim of murder. Jealousy, revenge, and greed all weave intricate threads through the fabric of these tragic deaths.
