Produced in collaboration between the BBC and WGBH, the series features Sam Waterston in the lead role as J. Robert Oppenheimer. While the script occasionally takes creative liberties with dialogue, it remains largely faithful to historical facts and, as far as the nature of the subject matter allowed, to the scientific context, given that it deals with information that was still classified at the time. The series alludes to a vast FBI file on Oppenheimer, which had become increasingly accessible during production and proved to be an invaluable resource for historians.

The series spans seven episodes, chronicling Oppenheimer's journey from his time at Berkeley to Los Alamos, where the atomic bomb was constructed and tested, to Princeton and Washington, where he presided as the director of the Institute for Advanced Study (where he served as Einstein's superior) and as a consultant to the AEC, serving as the nation's preeminent advisor on atomic energy. The series also delves into the early stages of his exile following the revocation of his security clearance.

The drama excels in its portrayal of the deliberations of the Interim Committee, which grappled with the potential uses of the bomb once it was completed, as well as the Security Hearing that ultimately led to Oppenheimer's clearance being stripped.
