The 1993 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 47th iteration of the prestigious FIA Formula One motor racing series. This exhilarating season commenced on March 14, 1993, and concluded on November 7, following a total of sixteen thrilling races. Alain Prost etched his name into the annals of Formula One history by securing his fourth Drivers' Championship, while the Williams-Renault team successfully defended their Constructors' Championship, marking their sixth victory in this esteemed category. A remarkable highlight of the season was the 1993 Spanish Grand Prix, where the trio of Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher collectively occupied the podium, a rare occurrence in the sport.
The 1993 Formula One calendar was distinguished by the much-anticipated return of the European Grand Prix, which had been absent for eight years since 1985. The race was held at Donington Park, a venue that would host Formula One for the sole time. This event was intended to replace the Pacific Grand Prix at the Autopolis circuit in Japan, following the collapse of a race hosting agreement. The sole departure from the calendar was the Mexican Grand Prix, which ceased after seven years at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City due to safety concerns regarding the circuit's particularly uneven surface.
This season stands out in Formula One history as it represented the zenith of electronic technology integration. It witnessed the construction of perhaps the most advanced and sophisticated Formula One cars to date. The championship-winning Williams-Renault FW15C, for instance, was not only equipped with a highly advanced hydraulically and electronically controlled active suspension but also bristled with an array of electronic features, including anti-lock brakes, fly-by-wire controls, traction control, and a semi-automatic gearbox capable of transitioning to full automation. The car also featured power steering, highly sophisticated on-board telemetry, engine pneumatic valve springs, and a "push to pass" system designed to enhance overtaking capabilities for drivers Alain Prost and Damon Hill. This system elevated the car's rear at high speeds and increased engine revs by 300, allowing the vehicle to maintain higher velocity on straights due to a slight reduction in downforce. Williams also experimented with a continuously variable transmission, though this system was subsequently banned. The Benetton team tested a four-wheel steering system towards the end of the season but never utilized it in any races. Virtually all cars in 1993 were fitted with an active suspension system, which maintained consistent ride height throughout a lap, significantly enhancing the car's aerodynamic efficiency. Despite being widely viewed as a non-driver aid, this system and all the aforementioned technologies, except for telemetry and pneumatic valve springs, were banned for the 1994 season.
Post-season, Alain Prost parted ways with Williams and retired from Grand Prix racing, with the title runner-up, Ayrton Senna, taking his place. Unfortunately, Senna's untimely fatal crash early in the next season meant that the 1993 season was the final victory for these two drivers, who had reigned supreme in Formula One for several years, amassing seven of the nine titles from 1985 to 1993. At the British Grand Prix, Prost achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Formula One driver to win 50 Grands Prix. Despite not securing the title, Senna had a season to remember, triumphing in his home race, demonstrating remarkable prowess at Donington Park, and setting a record-breaking fifth consecutive Monaco Grand Prix win since 1989. Nonetheless, Prost's Williams maintained its momentum from the previous season, and Prost was firmly in control of the title race from mid-season onwards. The year 1993 also marked the beginning of a successful streak for Damon Hill, who, at the age of 33, won three races consecutively during his first full Formula One season.
