简介： The narrative unfolds within a British Military Intelligence Office located in Whitehall during the year 1956. Here, a discreet cadre of foreign affairs analysts find their tranquil lives interrupted by the tumultuous events of the Suez Crisis. Ewan McGregor portrays Mick Hopper, a young man serving his national service as an interpreter of Russian documents. Tiring of his mundane role, Hopper fills his days with imaginative reveries, conjuring scenes of his colleagues belting out popular hits of the time. Louise Germaine embodies Sylvia Berry, the blonde and volatile wife of the ferocious Corporal Pete Berry, played by Douglas Henshall. Sylvia becomes the object of desire for Mick's colleague, Private Francis Francis, a bumbling Welsh intellectual whose academic pursuits were disrupted by his conscription into the army. Francis, unlike the savvy Hopper, is an awkward individual whose intellectual career has been suspended by his military service. The arrival of the scholarly niece of a newly posted American officer allows these two conscripts to find compatible partners after a period of initial mismatch. Among the subplot threads are the pervasive influence of American rock and roll on English society, the yawning divide between senior analysts, who are career military officers, and the drafted ranks, the works of the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, and the admiration for grand theatre pipe organs. The unconventional setting—a military ethos transplanted into a civilian office environment—mirrors the author Potter's own national service experiences in the 1950s. Despite adopting the structure of a romantic comedy, the film diverges from Potter's more avant-garde works of his middle period. It is not sparing in its depiction of graphic sex and violence, nor does it lack Potter's hallmark dreamlike visuals. The highlight of this production is the surreal musical sequence, performed to the tune of "In a Persian Market."
