Ah-Ha! In 1995, Norwich's most renowned son, Alan Partridge, made the leap from radio to television with "Knowing Me, Knowing You," a talk show that was profoundly misunderstood. A shrewd television critic once aptly described it as "moribund." However, let us consider Alan's enthralling array of guests, which includes a hypnotist who convinces Alan he is an owl; a US pop diva with whom Alan shares a memorable duet with ABBA, but unfortunately, he sings in all the wrong keys; a raunchy male dance troupe known as Hot Pants; a Cirque des Clowns act that disturbs Alan with its extreme violence; and, most thrillingly, Roger Moore, who joined the show via a mobile phone call from a traffic jam on the Chiswick roundabout.

Despite facing hardships later on, as vividly depicted in the splendid "I'm Alan Partridge" Series 1 and Series 2, Steve Coogan's creation is now basking in the glory of prime-time television, free from any thoughts of descending into "clinical sadness" or indulging excessively in Toblerone bars. Co-writers Armando Iannucci and Patrick Marber meticulously re-create all the artificial and contrived aspects of the talk show genre: shameless self-promotion, obstinate celebrities, novelty acts, and, above all, the intolerably smug host who remains oblivious to his own monotony. Coogan's recurring guests are masterfully portrayed by familiar faces from "The Day Today": Rebecca Front, Doon MacKichan, David Schneider, and even Patrick Marber himself. Additional adept guest stars include John Thomson, who plays a naval officer also named Alan Partridge, Minnie Driver as a transsexual agony aunt, and Steve Brown as the disconcertingly gay music director Glen Ponder.

The zenith of Alan's career was reached with his Christmas special, "Knowing Me, Knowing Yule," where his living room was lovingly replicated at Television Centre. Regrettably, and in spite of the presence of Mick Hucknall, the newly appointed Chief Commissioning Editor of BBC TV, Tony Hayers was profoundly unimpressed with the show. He was then physically attacked by Alan, who, as it turns out, is skilled with a turkey. With this shock, Alan's career took a downturn.
