简介：
Samantha Byrd is a towering, clumsy girl who is perennially bullied by Judith, a moderately well-liked girl who delights in taunting her with remarks such as "Fly away, Byrd." Samantha's basketball skills are notably lacking, and she is compelled to remain after school for relentless practice sessions.
On a particularly gloomy afternoon following a practice, Samantha encounters a disoriented elderly woman in the woods. Not only does she converse with this stranger, but she also accompanies her to an unfamiliar location. The grateful elderly woman, overwhelmed by Samantha's kindness, grants her three wishes. Samantha's first wish, articulated with a hint of awkwardness, is to "be the strongest player on the basketball team." This wish inadvertently results in the entire team, including Judith, falling ill with the flu. Judith, in a fit of jealousy, accuses Samantha of being a witch, to which Samantha, in a moment of anger, responds by wishing Judith would simply vanish.
Upon waking the following morning, Samantha discovers herself as the sole human left in the world. After aimlessly wandering, the elderly woman reappears and confesses her ineptitude with magic. She explains that her attempt to make Judith disappear inadvertently caused everyone to vanish, including Samantha. The woman offers to cancel the wish and grant Samantha a third one. Samantha wishes for a return to normalcy and for Judith to regard her as the most wonderful person alive.
This wish is fulfilled, and Judith becomes excessively fixated on every detail of Samantha's life, carrying her books to class, sneaking into her bedroom at night, and waiting outside her house each morning to accompany her to school. After a failed attempt to escape Judith by crashing her bike, Samantha encounters the elderly woman again, who grants her a fourth wish. Samantha wishes that she had never met the old woman, and instead, it was Judith who encountered her.
As Samantha departs the wooded area, she looks down upon a smiling Judith, who has just said, "Why don't you fly away, Byrd?" To Samantha's horror, she has been transformed into a bird.
