1. "True Commitment" (26 February 1996)
In "True Commitment," Kavanagh finds himself defending a left-of-center demonstrator charged with assaulting a neo-Nazi at a protest rally. The defendant initially maintains sole responsibility, but upon learning that his well-to-do girlfriend had turned him in to the authorities, he alters his narrative, claiming he merely acted chivalrously and that the stabbing was his girlfriend's handiwork. Despite their work-from-home marriage, where Lizzie is based in Strasbourg, the Kavanaghs must navigate the challenges of their relationship. Meanwhile, Kate departs for Cambridge, and Lizzie is overjoyed to hear that her tutor is the husband of one of her dearest childhood companions. However, her delight turns to dismay upon discovering that her daughter and the tutor are involved in an affair, prompting Kavanagh to lose his composure. Finally, is Jeremy on the cusp of discovering true love?
2. "Men of Substance" (4 March 1996)
In "Men of Substance," Kavanagh takes on a case for Her Majesty's Customs. The case is fraught with complexity, as 15 kilograms of heroin were intercepted concealed within condemned meat, yet there is a lack of tangible or forensic evidence linking the drugs to any of the accused individuals. One of the accused, Kevin Gregson, has a history of witness tampering and appears to be maintaining his usual MO when Kavanagh and his wife face intimidation. Kavanagh harbors doubts that the evidence tells the whole story and senses that something is amiss.
3. "The Burning Deck" (11 March 1996)
Kavanagh represents Lieutenant Ralph Kinross RN, who is accused of inciting a fire at a naval barracks. His co-defendant is Jones, a childhood friend and fellow sailor in the same unit, who had lent money to the sailor whose bed was accidentally set ablaze. Kavanagh's colleague, Eleanor Harker QC, is defending Jones but is grappling with personal issues at home as well. The defense strategy hinges on the role of Chief Evans, the senior rating overseeing the engineering department and a former tormentor of Jones. Meanwhile, Julia receives an impromptu marriage proposal in chambers, leaving her with a brief window to make a decision.
4. "A Sense of Loss" (19 March 1996)
In "A Sense of Loss," Kavanagh defends a young man accused of gunning down a police officer. The boy has confessed to the authorities but now pleads not guilty, steadfastly refusing to assist Kavanagh in his defense.
5. "A Stranger in the Family" (25 March 1996)
A tragic industrial accident at a recycling plant leaves a young man with both mental and physical disabilities. Kavanagh is tasked with securing a just compensation settlement from the insurance company on behalf of the affected family.
6. "Job Satisfaction" (2 April 1996)
Kavanagh confronts the most intricate case of his legal career to date: the apparent murder of a farmer by his son and daughter, who also killed the farmer's second wife.
