**Mute of Malice**
Kavanagh's defense of an army chaplain accused of taking his brother's life is compounded by the extraordinary challenge that his client is unwilling to communicate. **Blood Money**
When her husband succumbs to complications in the operating theater following a car accident, Sarah Meadows is convinced of negligence. Kavanagh, despite his reservations about the case's prospects, agrees to represent her against the hospital, with Jeremy Aldermarten defending the institution. The surgeon departed the theater prematurely, yet the patient was in a stable condition at the time. Amidst the legal proceedings, Kavanagh is called upon to address a colleague's conduct. At home, the Kavanaghs are disheartened to learn that their son Matt has failed his A-level exams.
**Ancient History**
Kavanagh prosecutes a seemingly blameless family doctor in an unprecedented war crimes trial, prompting him to reflect on the reliability of human memory after fifty years. The court is bombarded with harrowing testimonies as survivors of Nazi atrocities recount their experiences in concentration camps.
**Diplomatic Baggage**
Natasha Jackson, the daughter of the UK's ambassador-designate to Austria, Sir Alan Jackson, is charged with the murder of journalist Lisa Aeurbach. Natasha's defense claims that the woman was already deceased by the time she arrived for an interview. The case takes an intriguing turn when Kavanagh is approached by an enigmatic government official whose sole priority is to shield the ambassador-designate from scandal. Meanwhile, Matt Kavanagh decides to move out and surprises his parents by sharing a flat with two charming young women. In the chambers, Peter Foxcott reconnects with an old friend he has not seen in years.
**The Ties That Bind**
Kavanagh agrees to undertake a private prosecution against Ian Vincent, who is accused of beating 17-year-old Graham Foster to death over a stolen briefcase. Vincent's stepfather, Ron Baab, leads a crime family and attempts to dissuade all parties with money and veiled threats. The case is primarily reliant on Graham's girlfriend, who has also been threatened, with little concrete evidence. Kavanagh finds himself in Florida, aiding his former student Julia Piper in preparing an appeal for an inmate on death row, awaiting execution by electrocution. It is evident that the original defense was poorly handled, with many facts unchallenged and no mitigation presented during the sentencing, despite the inmate's limited emotional development and abusive upbringing. As Julia goes into premature labor, Kavanagh finds himself personally advocating for the case and uncovering the true circumstances. Back home, Lizzie Kavanagh receives distressing news from her doctors, choosing to wait until her husband returns to share the news with him.
