The 1998 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 52nd edition of this esteemed motor racing series. This competitive season, spanning from 8 March to 1 November, comprised a total of sixteen exhilarating races. Mika Häkkinen triumphed in the Drivers' Championship, while the Constructors' Championship was secured by McLaren-Mercedes.
The 1998 campaign was characterized by a significant reshuffle of the pecking order, with McLaren-Mercedes emerging as the fastest constructor. Häkkinen dominated the championship with a commanding lead. However, a mid-season surge from Michael Schumacher and Ferrari turned the tides, as he achieved a hat-trick of wins and additional victories in Hungary and Italy. This result left the two title contenders level on points heading into the penultimate round at the Nürburgring. Despite Schumacher taking pole position and appearing to have control early on, Häkkinen ultimately showcased his superior pace, securing victory. With Häkkinen enjoying the advantageous position before the final round, Schumacher needed to ensure a gap between him and Häkkinen in the final race. While Schumacher secured pole position, his car stalled on the grid. Despite relentless efforts to claw back, he suffered a puncture while running third, allowing Häkkinen to claim the championship with his eighth win of the season. Nonetheless, Ferrari had an impressive season, highlighted by their first 1-2 finish since 1990 in France, with Eddie Irvine finishing second to Schumacher. Irvine, however, ended the season significantly behind McLaren's second driver, David Coulthard, in the final standings. The Constructors' Championship remained a close race until the final round.
The season witnessed the withdrawal of the Renault factory and the departure of designer Adrian Newey to McLaren. The Williams team, adorned with an atypical red livery, faced a challenging and ultimately unsuccessful defense of their championship title, along with the reigning Drivers' Champion, Jacques Villeneuve. Williams managed to hold onto third place in the Constructors' race but suffered their first winless season since 1988 and their first title-free campaign since 1990. The same fate awaited them in 1999, though they secured a podium finish in Canada. Benetton also endured a problematic winless season, with young driver Giancarlo Fisichella shining brightly with a pole position and a couple of podium finishes. Jordan initially struggled without points for half the season, seemingly poised for a disappointing campaign. However, a strong resurgence enabled the team to capitalize on the chaos during the rain-soaked Belgian Grand Prix, where Damon Hill led his teammate, Ralf Schumacher, to an exceptional 1-2 finish. The season also marked the final race for the former champion team, Tyrrell, as their patron, Ken Tyrrell, sold the team to British American Tobacco. Tyrrell concluded their season on a disappointing note, failing to score a single point.
