In the year 2262, Earthforce Captain Elizabeth Lochley was entrusted with the command of Babylon 5. As the station evolved, it emerged as a haven for wayward telepaths who had fled the Psi Corps, which in turn led to tensions. G'Kar, the former ambassador of the Narn to Babylon 5, inadvertently became a spiritual symbol following the publication of a tome he penned during his imprisonment during the Narn-Centauri War. The Drakh, erstwhile allies of the Shadows who had lingered in the galaxy, assumed control over Regent Virini on Centauri Prime through the agency of a parasitic entity known as a Keeper. They then fomented a conflict between the Centauri and the Interstellar Alliance, with the intent of isolating the Centauri from the Alliance and securing a pliable homeworld for themselves.
Centauri Prime was ravaged by Narn and Drazi fleets, and Londo Mollari ascended to the throne as emperor, reluctantly accepting a Drakh Keeper under duress from the threat of the planet's total nuclear annihilation. (Portions of the end of his reign are glimpsed through various prophetic visions scattered throughout the series; they depict Mollari and his erstwhile arch-rival (and eventual ally) G'Kar, sixteen years hence, succumbing to their enmity. It is incrementally uncovered that there was a deeper, more amicable undercurrent, with Mollari becoming a pawn to the Drakh's dominion and losing interest in life; his Drakh Keeper ultimately awakens and throttles G'Kar in retribution. Vir Cotto, Mollari's steadfast and morally upright aide, succeeded him as emperor, free from Drakh manipulation. Sheridan and Delenn exchanged vows and retired to Minbar, taking the Interstellar Alliance's headquarters with them. G'Kar departed Babylon 5 to shun his unwanted acclaim and explore the outer reaches. Garibaldi also tied the knot and settled down on Mars. The majority of the other key characters exited Babylon 5.
Nineteen years down the line, on the brink of expiration, Sheridan embarked on a farewell visit to the decommissioning Babylon 5 station. It seemed Sheridan perished, yet he was embraced by the First Ones, who extended an invitation for him to embark on a journey beyond the galaxy's rim. Babylon 5 was dismantled shortly after Sheridan's departure, its presence rendered unnecessary as the Alliance had assumed its diplomatic duties. This final chapter included a brief appearance by Straczynski in the role of the technician who switched off the lights before Babylon 5's dismantling.
