Memento Mori
After the tragic demise of Lizzie, Kavanagh accepts the challenging case of Dr. Felix Crawley, who is accused of administering a lethal dose of lithium to his melancholic and unfaithful wife, Ann. Dr. Crawley maintains that he discreetly treated Ann out of the stigma associated with her condition, and that her death was an unintentional accident. As Kavanagh delves into the prosecution's witnesses, which include Ann's lover and her young niece, whose advances Felix had rejected, he begins to empathize with his bereaved client, feeling a growing sense of kinship.
Care in the Community
Kavanagh, alongside his firm's head, Peter Foxcott, travels to Kavanagh's hometown of Bolton to defend Debbie Sattenthwaite and Mark Holmes, who are charged with the murder of their 14-month-old daughter. Alas, the couple's testimonies abruptly diverge as Mark alters his story, leaving Foxcott astonished by Kavanagh's aggressive tactics towards Debbie, necessitating his intervention to support his colleague.
Briefs Trooping Gaily
Grieving the loss of his wife, Kavanagh is called upon to defend a woman who stands accused of killing her abusive husband. Although she has a compelling case for manslaughter, she seems resolute in pleading guilty to murder. Simultaneously, Jeremy is at odds with his obligations as the lead actor in a Gilbert & Sullivan production and his own charge of professional misconduct for reviewing a defense document.
Bearing Witness
Kavanagh's personal convictions and professional pride clash when his clerk, Tom, requests that he represent his ex-girlfriend, Susannah Emmott. Following their breakup, Susannah married a Jehovah's Witness, adopting his beliefs until he disillusioned and left her. She has a 13-year-old son, Luke, whose father is unaware of his existence, and who requires a life-saving blood transfusion that contravenes Susannah's religious beliefs. Jeremy becomes entangled with a group of environmentalists fighting to preserve local woodlands.
Innocency of Life
Kavanagh triumphantly defends a young vicar, Ian Winfarthing, against accusations of sexual harassment by pub landlady Anne Murchison. However, when Anne faces charges for the murder of her husband, Tom, who was known for his drunken and bullying behavior, Ian claims that he and Anne were lovers, and that the harassment charges were merely a facade. They were together in bed when Tom died. Jeremy engages in a relationship with an alluring aristocrat, discarding her for his career when she reveals her pregnancy, and later discovering that he has abandoned a wealthy heiress.
Dead Reckoning
Kavanagh travels to the Yorkshire fishing port of Stainmouth to prosecute Roy Lawrence for negligence following the apparent sinking of his seaworthy trawler, which resulted in the loss of five lives, including his son Paul. The defense asserts that a submarine collided with the boat, a claim that grows increasingly plausible. Roy is well-liked in the bereaved community, and even Kavanagh's junior associate, Emma, feels sympathy for him. However, Kavanagh believes Roy had his own agenda and is not the philanthropist he appears to be. Additionally, he prevents a crisis at the firm by persuading Tom to stay.
