Morse suddenly falls gravely ill during a museum reception and is promptly hospitalized. In the confines of the medical facility, Supt. Strange makes a visit, urging Morse to consider an early retirement. Concurrently, Dr. Millicent 'Millie' Van Buren presents him with her tome detailing a 140-year-old judicial enigma, the Oxford Canal Murders. This harrowing case entwined the heinous crimes of murder and rape against a young woman, Mrs. Joanna Franks, as she embarked on a canal boat journey from Coventry to London. As Morse delves into Millie's narrative, he is soon haunted by the enigmas surrounding the case. He ponders the omission of theft charges against the three men, the peculiar choice of a boat over a faster, more comfortable train, and Mrs. Franks' failure to abandon the vessel after her grievances with the crew's lewd behavior. Additionally, he questions her decision to socialize with the crew and the mysterious disappearance of her 'carpet bag,' which was absent from the court records and the archives, alongside her nearly empty trunk, adorned with the initials of her late first husband. The perplexing discovery of her shoes on the boat, with no witnesses to her return from the forest, further deepens the mystery.
PC Adrian Kershaw, with his scholarly background in history and invaluable insights, aids Morse in unraveling the case. He points out that the boatmen were notorious for their Sunday work, a practice that led to the construction of a chapel for them in Oxford.
The deceased woman's attire and the shoes found aboard the boat are subjected to contemporary forensic analysis. The findings were conclusive: the shoes did not match the stature of the body found in the water, and they had never been worn in the forest.
The deceased's husband, Charles Franks, was the sole individual to identify the body. Despite the woman's disfigured and darkened face, he identified a birthmark behind her ear—a detail he claimed only a husband or a lover would know. The prosecution welcomed this information, while the defense attorney argued that the guilt of the three accused had not been sufficiently proven. The accused steadfastly maintained their innocence until the end, with one escaping execution after embracing Christianity in prison.
Morse tasked Kershaw with probing whether Charles Franks profited from his wife's demise, and it was indeed discovered that he had pocketed 300 pounds in insurance money. The case was seemingly resolved: Charles Franks had murdered a tall woman and discarded her in the canal after encountering Joanna in the forest. If Joanna Franks had jumped from the boat simultaneously with the body hitting the water, she may have swum to the shore and reunited with her husband. The couple then changed their names, with 'Charles Franks' adopting a new identity following his supposed 'death' as Joanna's first husband. The fourth boatman, who was not charged, was likely compensated by Joanna to provide false testimony.
Morse embarked on a journey to Ireland, where he had the grave of Joanna's first husband exhumed. The coffin contained nothing but bags of sand and a few stones.
