简介： In 1969, amidst the vibrant and tumultuous backdrop of Swing London, Ray Purbrick, ensconced in his apartment at Notting Hill Gate, toiled away editing an 'underground' (that is, countercultural) magazine known as Mouth. His assistants were his compatriots in the counterculture movement: Alex, Jill, and Hugo. Ray was an ardent proponent of protest, a man whose enthusiasm for every hip trend knew no bounds, and who firmly believed himself to be (or had the potential to become) a key figure in the conflict between the establishment and the alternative society.

Alex, despite his origins in a wealthy family and his preoccupation with golf over societal reform, epitomized coolness, a man so relaxed that it appeared he lived in a realm apart from the everyday. Jill embraced the newfound freedoms for her gender, espousing the ideology of free love; however, this attitude did not extend to her 'boyfriend', Ray, whose romantic interest in her had long waned.

Hugo was a marvel of ambiguity, almost a genius in his indirectness. Guided by Ray, the quartet eagerly climbed aboard every trendy bandwagon, only to comprehensively fall short of making the slightest dent in their endeavors. The group was woefully inept at nearly everything—they were not even particularly adept at embodying the spirit of the hippie movement.

Crafted by the creative minds behind "Father Ted," "Hippies" held great promise but, regrettably, fell short. The series presented charming characters and some amusing jokes (such as Ray's protest against the Miss World competition with a placard reading 'Miss World Devalues Women'), yet it failed to authentically capture the essence of the era. Its intent was to illustrate the banality of life during what has since been mythologized as a thrilling period, but the execution lacked authenticity—it did not look, sound, or feel like the 1960s.
