1. "Previous Convictions" (8 March 1999)
In a tragic accident on 8th March 1999, a Royal Air Force Jet Provost trainer aircraft crashes during a bustling moto-cross event, resulting in the loss of 22 lives. Among the victims is a young man close to Kavanagh's son. The RAF Corporal in charge of maintenance takes his own life, assigning the responsibility to his lover, Charlotte Sinclair, portrayed by Anna Ryan. Charlotte is subsequently charged with theft and conspiracy to commit murder. The narrative delves into the question of sabotage versus human error as Kavanagh tirelessly defends Charlotte and seeks access to documents initially withheld from the court. The story reaches its crescendo with a dazzling display of magic and a poetic recitation at a celebratory dinner at the Middle Temple.
2. "The More Loving One" (15 March 1999)
In London, a devastating explosion claims the life of Annie, a woman struggling with heroin addiction. Her boyfriend, Michael, a former addict and convicted arsonist, is seen at the scene, simultaneously smoking a cigarette and peering through the letter-box. He confesses to the first two individuals he encounters, "I killed her." The mystery unfolds as Kavanagh is tasked with defending Michael, while elsewhere, Miss Miller represents a pit bull terrier in Romford before returning to London to assist Kavanagh as his junior in the murder case. Aldermarten steps in to manage the situation, and soon finds himself investing in a greyhound, prompting everyone to attend a race meeting.
3. "Time Of Need" (22 March 1999)
On 22nd March 1999, a Junior Home Office Minister, portrayed by Penelope Wilton, is acquitted of charges of having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old boy 16 years prior in Hastings. Despite the acquittal, she is terminated from her government post. Kavanagh takes on the role of representing her in a lawsuit against the police for wrongful prosecution, arguing the case on the grounds of malicious prosecution.
4. "End Games" (29 March 1999)
The events of November 1985 at Turnbrook Services culminate in a botched robbery where a pregnant teacher and a young boy meet their fate. The following year, three men are sentenced to life imprisonment with minimum terms ranging from 15 to 23 years. Kavanagh, who was the junior counsel for the defense in this flawed trial, later learns of the suicide of the man who fired the final shot in 1992, leaving a note acknowledging the innocence of one of the accused. A series of hunger strikes and petitions ensue, leading to a significant appeal 12 years after the initial murders. Kavanagh and Miss Miller take on the case of one of the men, Cracken, for his appeal, with Aldermarten defending the other. After the appeal, Peter Foxcott, played by Oliver Ford Davies, decides to retire following a health scare. Kavanagh is offered the position of Head of Chambers at Riverside Court. Subsequently, Kavanagh and Eleanor embark on a weekend getaway to the lively seaside town of Brighton, "raffish" as she describes it, but ultimately choose to part ways as friends, as she is set to become a Prosecutor for the International War Crimes Tribunal for Yugoslavia based in The Hague.
