Robson Green has long been one of the UK's most beloved television actors, and for good reason. His charm and charisma are undeniable, and his presence in a drama guarantees a delightful viewing experience. Enter "Close and True," one of the few series Green has produced between his acclaimed role in "Soldier Soldier" and his current hit, "Wire in the Blood." This is a robust six-episode series (including an opening feature-length episode), where Robson portrays John Close, a mergers and acquisitions solicitor who, for the past few years, has been based in London. However, he returns to his hometown of Newcastle on a mission of mercy when his former best friend, Steve Sheedy, is charged with attempted murder.

Determined to assist Sheedy in any way possible, Close inadvertently becomes entangled with the decrepit legal firm representing him, Simons and True. As John delves deeper into the mystery, he becomes increasingly convinced that his future lies in his hometown, perhaps even as a partner at Simons and True. This realization comes to fruition when, in the second episode, the firm's owner, Simons, skips town to Australia (the firm is in significant financial strife). This episode also introduces the exceptional James Bolam as Graham True, a fellow partner (Graham is actually residing in a facility for individuals with mental health issues when we first encounter him). The remaining five episodes showcase Close tackling cases ranging from assault to further intrigue in the Steve Sheedy case. Throughout, Close endeavors to revitalize the firm, reinvigorate the gruff True, and rebuild connections with his family and friends, all while finding time for a touch of romance.

It is a pity that Green did not continue to produce more series of this engaging show. Keep an eye out for the young star of "Billy Elliot," Jamie Bell, as the son of Steve Sheedy.

While there are no special features, both Robson Green enthusiasts and aficionados of sophisticated crime dramas will undoubtedly cherish spending time with this compelling offering.
