The 1982 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 36th iteration of the FIA Formula One motor racing series. This season officially kicked off on January 23 and concluded on September 25, following a total of sixteen races. The Drivers' Championship was triumphantly captured by Keke Rosberg, while the Manufacturers' Championship was claimed by Ferrari.
Renowned motorsport journalist Nigel Roebuck later reflected on the 1982 season, describing it as "a year fraught with ugliness, marred by tragedy, discord, and avarice. Yet, paradoxically, it yielded some of the most unforgettable racing ever witnessed." The campaign commenced with a drivers' strike at the season's opening event in South Africa and was further shadowed by a partial race boycott during the San Marino Grand Prix, a consequence of the ongoing FISA–FOCA conflict. Two drivers met their tragic ends amidst the high-speed chaos: Gilles Villeneuve during the qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix and Riccardo Paletti at the start of the Canadian Grand Prix. Later in the season, championship favorite Didier Pironi suffered a catastrophic accident during the qualifying rounds for the German Grand Prix. These tragic incidents, coupled with several other major accidents, prompted regulatory changes aimed at enhancing driver safety for the upcoming season.
Despite winning just a solitary race during the season – a feat not achieved by a World Champion since Mike Hawthorn in 1958 – Rosberg's unwavering consistency earned him the title, ultimately securing it at the final race of the season ahead of Didier Pironi and John Watson. Eleven drivers claimed victories throughout the season, with no driver achieving more than two wins, and witnessing nine different winners across nine consecutive races. Ferrari, having replaced Villeneuve and Pironi with Patrick Tambay and 1978 World Champion Mario Andretti, still managed to accumulate sufficient points to secure the constructors' trophy despite their profound losses. Rosberg's championship in the Williams FW08 was the final title for a naturally aspirated car before the ban on turbocharged engines in 1989.
