简介： This rendition of "Casanova" starkly contrasts with the UK television adaptation that graced screens more than two decades ago. In 2005, Russell T. Davies, a name currently synonymous with the pivotal writer of the rebooted "Doctor Who," has crafted a Casanova for the modern era, incorporating contemporary language and allusions (complete with National Lottery catchphrases; Casanova serenades his young son with 'The Wheels on the Bus'). Despite this, he hasn't neglected the weighty themes of the narrative.

David Tennant embodies the youthful Casanova, a figure who confidently strides from the Italian countryside to the pretentious aristocracy of France and later to England. He is an enigmatic blend of irritability, vitality, and allure, delivering a compelling character portrait of history's most renowned seducer. His fluctuating relationship with the captivating, enigmatic Henriette (portrayed by Laura Fraser) is the narrative's focal point, as she alternately betrays and tempts him into perilous predicaments. His escapades are executed in the classic "Carry On" manner.

Peter O'Toole takes on the role of the venerable Casanova, depicted as a "senior librarian in a damp, castle-like abode," now reduced to a mere servant at the mercy of his memories. As expected, O'Toole delivers a magnificent performance in a multifaceted role, balancing humor and charm with a poignant history. The seasoned Casanova has the power to evoke laughter and stir the soul, a performance that is undoubtedly Bafta-worthy.

The ensemble cast boasts several names worth noting. Nina Sosanya plays Bellino, the castrato singer who captures the heart of our protagonist in the opening episode. Nickolas Grace is the French Chancellor, Matt Lucas embodies a perfumed Duke of Villars, Rupert Penry-Jones portrays the detestable Grimani, and Shaun Parkes takes on the role of Rocco, the旁观者, observing the life of the young Casanova from the periphery.

Filmed with creativity (repeated scenes, unusual angles, slow-motion, and extreme close-ups), and accompanied by a vibrant script (which can be whimsical at times), this three-hour production promises to be a delightful viewing experience.
