简介： The White Guardian issues a solemn warning of an impending threat and guides the TARDIS to what initially seems to be an Edwardian sailing yacht, the SS Shadow. However, it is in fact one of a fleet of spaceships engaged in a high-stakes race across the solar system, with the ultimate prize being Enlightenment. At the helm of the yacht is Captain Striker, along with his fellow officers, who are the Eternals. These beings draw sustenance from the thoughts and emotions of their captured human crew, known as Ephemerals, to satiate their own hollow existences.

Turlough attempts to break free from the Black Guardian's sway by leaping into the void of space, but he is swiftly rescued and taken aboard the vessel captained by Wrack, another member of the Eternals. During the race, two of the other ships are mysteriously destroyed, and Turlough learns that this grim outcome has been orchestrated by Wrack, utilizing a potent beam of mental energy, with the assistance of the Black Guardian.

The Doctor boards Wrack's ship, identifies its source of power, and with Turlough's aid, banishes her and her Number Two, Mansell, into the cosmos. The Doctor and Turlough then steer the ship toward a port—a luminous crystalline structure suspended in the expanse of space—and in so doing, claim victory in the race. The White Guardian offers Turlough a share of Enlightenment, while the Black Guardian demands that the boy surrender the Doctor in exchange for a colossal diamond ensconced within a radiant artifact, purportedly the prize.

Confronted with this moral crossroads, Turlough makes his decisive choice: he sweeps the crystal from the table and directs it straight towards the Black Guardian, who is engulfed in flames and vanishes. With this act, the boy is now free, for it is revealed that Enlightenment was not a tangible artifact, but the power of choice itself.
