PJ Franklin, portrayed by Jordana Spiro, is a professional sportswriter in search of love within her close-knit circle of male friends. This group, akin to a second family, occasionally complicates her romantic endeavors. The men she encounters often struggle to comprehend her unorthodox interests and the significant role these men play in her life.
PJ's unapologetically masculine approach to relationships tends to deter potential suitors, prompting her only female confidante to suggest that she adopt a more traditionally feminine demeanor. Being "one of the guys" offers numerous advantages: engaging in poker games, participating in pick-up softball matches, cheering on sports teams, or simply socializing at their favorite watering hole. However, for PJ, embracing this identity as a female who belongs to the boys' club can be an arduous endeavor.
In the first season, numerous episodes featured characters visiting Match.com, a sponsor of the show, which was frequently referenced in conversations. The season concluded on a suspenseful cliffhanger on December 28, 2006. The episode "The Promise of a New Season" aired on July 30, 2007, and was initially heralded as the launch of the second season. This season comprised a mere nine episodes. Subsequently, the first 13 episodes, which were broadcast in 2006, were merged with these nine episodes, resulting in a total of 22 episodes that were collectively released as Season One on DVD. The show was picked up for a second season with eight episodes, ultimately producing nine episodes. Season 2 premiered on Thursday, June 12, 2008, and, like its predecessor, concluded with a cliffhanger. The third season commenced on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, with another batch of nine episodes.
The second season's cliffhanger was resolved when Bobby and Elsa called off their engagement, with Bobby confessing his feelings for PJ. The couple embarked on a relationship throughout the season, despite their efforts to keep it concealed. Concurrently, Brendan opened a new club with John, only to find himself handling the lion's share of the work. After highlighting his invaluable contributions to John, Brendan successfully negotiated a more favorable salary and work schedule. He also acknowledged the need to break his pattern of dating emotionally unstable women, a sentiment reinforced by the erratic "girlfriend" of Chicago Cubs player Mike Fontenot, who made a guest appearance in the season 3 finale. By the end of the season, it was revealed that Kenny and Stephanie had continued their clandestine romance in Arizona, and they were indeed in love.
On October 7, 2008, TBS announced plans to produce a third season of the show. A fresh set of nine episodes premiered on March 31, 2009. On September 11, 2009, TV Guide's website confirmed that the show had been renewed for a fourth season, although production would commence in January 2010. The new season premiered on TBS on July 25, 2010.
