The characters are robust and captivating, maintaining their integrity from the novel and bringing their roles to life with youthful fervor. Despite their relative inexperience in acting, the child actors deliver compelling performances. Zoe Wanamaker excels as the scatterbrained and eccentric Mrs. Tachyon.

'Johnny and the Bomb' is a delightful blend of science fiction, light fantasy, and drama, with a touch of romance. It transcends the typical portrayal of children frolicking in the 1940s, instead exploring how they navigate this foreign era, addressing racial and sexual stereotypes they have never encountered. As a result, while primarily aimed at teenagers, adults who are fans of Pratchett's novels or simply enjoy sci-fi and light fantasy will undoubtedly find it thoroughly enjoyable. As an adaptation, it is a resounding success, with some changes from the novel but largely remaining faithful to the book's essence and maintaining what made it a great read.

I can only hope that the BBC continues to produce more dramas of this caliber, as it is far superior to the usual fare that often graces our screens. Dramas, whether targeted at children or adults, are the BBC's forte, and it is a pity that they do not produce more like 'Johnny and the Bomb,' which is arguably one of the best British shows I've seen this year. It would be delightful to have this available on DVD in the near future.
