The 1983 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 37th edition of this esteemed motor racing series. This pivotal season showcased the 1983 Formula One World Championship for Drivers and the 1983 Formula One World Championship for Constructors, both of which were fiercely contested concurrently over a comprehensive fifteen-race calendar. Commencing on March 13th and culminating on October 15th, the races captivated fans worldwide.
Nelson Piquet emerged triumphant in the Drivers' Championship, securing his second Formula One title. His victory was particularly notable, as it was the first ever by a driver utilizing a turbocharged engine. Meanwhile, the Ferrari team claimed the Constructors' Championship.
The Drivers' Championship evolved into a thrilling four-way tussle, with Brabham-BMW ace Piquet squaring off against Renault's Alain Prost and the Ferrari duo of René Arnoux and Patrick Tambay. Prost dominated the championship from the Belgian Grand Prix in May until the decisive final race in South Africa in October. However, a turbo problem forced Prost to retire, allowing Piquet to seize the title in a dramatic twist of fate. Ferrari's Constructors' Championship victory was all the more remarkable, as their superior driver, Arnoux, finished only third overall – a rare achievement in Formula One lore.
The season also featured a single non-championship Formula One race, the Race of Champions, which took place at Brands Hatch. Defending World Champion Keke Rosberg claimed victory in a Williams-Ford, marking the final non-championship race in Formula One history.
A significant transformation in technical regulations was introduced, mandating a flat undertray for the cars and imposing a complete ban on the revolutionary ground effect technology that had been introduced by the Lotus 78 in 1977. This reform was implemented to reduce downforce and cornering speeds, which were deemed to have reached perilous levels in 1982, a season marred by several violent and tragic accidents.
