简介： Upon completing a business trip to New York City, Russell Shoemaker is abruptly awakened to a surreal scene: the city is devoid of electronic technology, and the human population has vanished, leaving over 99% of the race in absence. Fueled by an insatiable urge to uncover the truth and a steadfast resolve to reunite with his family, Russell embarks on a perilous journey back to his hometown in Seattle. Throughout his odyssey, he meticulously chronicles and relays his experiences in a journal.

"The Afterworld" unfolds as Russell traverses a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) expanse of a post-apocalyptic America, encountering enigmatic societies that are in the process of reconstructing themselves. Concurrently, he endeavors to unravel the enigma behind the catastrophic global occurrence, which the survivors label as "the Fall."

Beyond witnessing the emergence of novel governance structures, Russell discovers that technology has collapsed due to a relentless electromagnetic pulse—a consequence of a constellation of satellites that were triggered almost in unison with the onset of the Fall. An unintended byproduct of the EMP is the swift transformation of numerous life forms, including Shoemaker himself. He observes a significant enhancement in his night vision and a marked increase in his endurance. Similarly, he encounters cattle succumbing to an unprecedented flesh-eating disease, a testament to the rapid mutation of life.

Russell's journey culminates in a nearly desolate San Francisco, where he arrives at the headquarters of an organization known as the Parthia Group. This group has developed a form of nano-technology capable of identifying individuals with a distinct genetic composition.
